“We started about four-to-five years ago in a closet of a storage facility,” business partner and part-owner Amy Kennedy said.
Kennedy and husband Scotty began their business part-time and were open for only family and friends.
Kennedy said she enjoys managing a small business while her husband works as a salesman, because guns are his passion.
She said many customers have noted that Texas Tactical is run by a true ‘gun guy’ who knows the ins and outs of the products, and will not only tell his customers what they carry, but show them how to use it.
Kennedy said the store carries a large amount of parts that other stores do not carry. She said although they do not carry everything, they carry the parts to build an AR-15 or upgrade a pistol.
She said the parts they have in-store are parts that they’ve used and know – they’re highly rated.
She said it’s a bit of trial and error, but if it’s in the store, they can guarantee it’s quality.
Along with selling firearms and equipment, Texas Tactical offers a gun range and license-to-carry classes.
In their range, Scotty Kennedy said, they allow double taps – unlike many other gun ranges.
Kennedy said he has always been involved in shooting-sports and now thrives on teaching people accuracy – and also enjoys seeing the expressions on their face.
“It’s not just teaching people how to use these guns, but teaching and training people how to use them as defense to survive when bad things happen,” he said.
Amy Kennedy said each lane in their gun range includes aerodynamics to help with sound and airflow in the area – she described the range as state-of-the-art.
There are also lanes wide enough to fit two to three people or for those who are handicapped.Because the range was built as a prototype and demo, a lot of the features are unique to Texas Tactical. She said there’s no other range like them right now.
Since opening, the couple is excited to dedicate their time to this business.
“It’s passion – we’re not about just one sale or trying to get someone to buy the most expensive thing,” Kennedy said. “Whether it’s the guy that pulls up in a Rolls-Royce or the 21-year-old buying his first gun, it’s about the customer, treating them right, and helping them find what they’re looking for.”
