Spring, Texas – May 28, 2019: A Spring High School sophomore died after getting caught in a rip current Sunday afternoon along Matagorda Beach.
The 16-year-old who has been identified as Joseph Thomas was swimming with his friends along Matagorda Beach on Sunday celebrating the Memorial Day weekend. According to his father, Thomas got caught in a rip current.
Rescue officials along with the U.S. Coast Guard searched throughout the night for Johnson. The search ended around 6:00 PM, Monday, after a body was recovered. It was later positively identified as Joseph Thomas.
Thomas’s father posted to Facebook saying that the family’s hearts were “irretrievably broken.”
“The body of our son and brother, Joseph Carlton Thomas has been recovered. Our hearts are irretrievably broken. Joseph had a spirit and personality that belied his youth, an air of confidence that was both encouraging and inspiring. We have been robbed of the gift he was in the flesh while we cherish how he touched us all. I have been fielding communications from kids and parents from across our area. Please know we appreciate every kind word, pleasant glance, big hug and understanding nod during this difficult time. Thank You Very Much.” – James A Thomas Jr., father of the late Joseph Thomas.
