Spring, Texas – February 20, 2019: The Klein Independent School District issued a statement Tuesday after a students’ “fake news” story went viral across social media.
According to district officials, a teacher at Klein Oak High School assigned students to create a fake news story as part of KISD’s Digital Citizenship Program. The assignment was meant to highlight the power and impact of misleading information.
One student allegedly created a fake post outside of the scope of the assignment. The story which accused a Klein Oak Assistant Principal of trafficking cocaine was subsequently posted to social media where it went viral.
This is the second year in a row that the district has issued a statement in reference to this assignment. In September 2018, a student wrote about the district being investigated by the DEA.
