Spring, Texas – March 15, 2019: When Heather Spencer and Max Hyman opened Jive Bar & Lounge in February of 2013, they had envisioned a cocktail lounge with high-end cocktails. Six years and change later, they realize it’s really the customers’ concept that took over and led them to success.
“We had envisioned a martini and scotch bar,” Spencer said. “The neighborhood kind of steered it into what it is now.”
The neighborhood, and thus the bar, got caught up in the craft beer craze that has been growing nationwide for the last six to ten years, Hyman said. The bar started out with nine beers on tap, and now has ninety taps with a variety of beers that changes on a regular basis, he said.
“Name the beer,” Hyman said. “If we don’t have it now, we’ll probably have it in a week or two.”
The bar’s liquor cabinet includes beers on tap, a large selection of wines, mead and an extensive variety of liquor served straight or mixed.
“I’m confident that we’ve got the best beer and spirits collection in Spring,” Hyman said.
Spencer and Hyman are proud of the bar and the fact that they’ve managed to keep quality staff. All of the business’ staff have been with the company at least three years with many having been there since the bar opened, she said.
Spencer and Hyman want customers to challenge their bartending staff. Uncommon cocktails and unique drinks are their specialty and almost anything a client can imagine is possible. Hyman said he wants patrons to challenge the bar staff because it makes the experience fun for everyone.
The bar’s food menu includes basic pub grub, with steak night every Thursday. Specialties include battered fries, fried green beans, and deep fried mushrooms.
“We get mad ravings about our wings too,” Hyman said. “That’s one of our most popular things.”
Their staff are one of the keys to the business’ success, Hyman said.
“Of course it’s a business to us, but this is definitely a passion for us too,” Spencer said. “We’re like a family here.”
The pair understands how important it is for that family to keep their guests entertained, they said. The bar has a variety of entertainment including pool tables, cornhole, giant jenga, darts, board games, Golden Tee and Ping Pong, among other attractions. Additionally, the venue is dog-friendly and has a patio for folks who want to sit back, puff a cigar and visit with friends.
Guests can also participate in a consistent list of weekly events. Every Tuesday, an open mic is open to comedians; Wednesdays are trivia nights; Thursdays are open mic nights for local singer-songwriters; Live music hits the stage every Friday night; and guests can take up a hand of poker and play for a bar tab every Sunday. Saturdays vary depending on the week and Monday’s are set for karaoke.
“We’ve been doing every Monday since we opened and we’ve had a great crowd for it,” Spencer said.
The bar is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with their third annual Patty’O Party with live entertainment and activities for patrons on their patio Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
As the couple looks to the future, they intend to stick with their plan of letting the customers chart the course, they said.
“It’s hard to say what we’ll be in five years,” Spencer said. “Our hope is to keep everyone entertained. “
